The United Nations has said that 6 million Afghans are on the brink of famine, with winter around the corner and humanitarian appeals dramatically underfunded.
Winters in Afghanistan can be extremely harsh, with temperatures dropping to -25°C, sometimes even lower, for months at a time. The season brings heavy snowfall, though this can vary depending on location and altitude.
Winter is also a peak hunger period as it provides very limited opportunities to food production and income generation more so with the drought currently experienced in the country
However, these extreme weather conditions make winter in Afghanistan very difficult for families, and the compound existing challenges they face. Heavy snowfall isolates remote communities from urban centers for months at a time, creating challenges for people in such communities to access basic services. If there has been drought during the summer before, these snowy conditions may perpetuate the food insecurity caused by the drought. Similarly, if there is less snowfall one winter, this can then contribute to drought in the spring and summer.
We at Zara Initiative strive to make available some of the basic winter necessities for people who are affected the most in Afghanistan. Providing various forms of assistance like Winter Clothing, Food Supplies, and Winter Heating Materials, we are able to alleviate some of the difficulties these people face on a yearly basis.
We take for granted the basic amenities we have like Electricity, Heating, Cooling, or just simply a warm meal. If one of these amenities was missing in our lives it would make a tremendous impact, so just imagine families that are missing all of them.
Let’s be grateful for what we have and lend a helping hand to the people who need it the most.
Please join us and help a family make it through the Winter.
